Red-banded Hairstreak (Calycopis cecrops)

Caterpillar HostplantsScott reports fallen leaves and detritus of Fragrant Sumac (Rhus aromatica), Wing-Rib Sumac (R. copallinum), and Southern Wax-Myrtle (Myrica cerifera). Opler reports they also feed on flowers and leaves and also utilize Croton spp. and Oak (Quercus spp.).

General NotesSome believe the Red-Banded Hairstreak and the Dusky-blueGroundstreak (Calycopis isobeon) to be the same species, however currently they are treated as separate species. The Red-Banded Hairstreak has a broad red band on the ventral side of the forewing while the Dusky-blue Groundstreak has a narrow band. The Red-Banded Hairstreak also has a faint red "cap" over the black tail spot on the ventral side of the hindwing while the Dusky-blue Groundstreak has a more extensive red "cap". Overwinters: Larva and pupa.
